The covering letter may have died and social media may be the news, but the C V is still your calling card when you are looking for a new job.
So what does it look like? Does it look a bit worn, maybe a little scrubby? Worse still, does it look old and outdated? When your C V crosses a recruiter’s desk, it only has seconds to make a big impression. And if it looks old, it can cost you the job.
Larry Chan, a partner at Rosenzweig & Company, likened it to updating an old dress. “It was fashionable 15 years ago, but now the margins have been ripped. Sometimes wholesale change is needed, ”he said.
If you think your C V might need a makeover, here are a few things you can update.
When documentaries are on fonts (“Helvetica”), you know they are important. An old font can make your resume and you’re obsolete (and out of this world). Newer fonts are generally fresher, cleaner, and easier to read. What does this mean for your resume? Instead of Courier or any serif font, try Arial, Garamond, or yes, Helvetica. You may also want to retire Times New Roman. After all, they are the “character sweatpants”.
Does the recruiter or hiring manager need to know where you live? No because no one offers a job or rejects a candidate in the mail. They all do it by email. So instead of wasting the space above with your address, enter your email, LinkedIn profile, phone number, and your most relevant social media profile. They’ll look for you anyway.
An objective statement
People are still opening their CV with an objective statement, said Shweta Kadam, head of human resources and talent acquisition for Kraft Food Group. It may have been fine 10 years ago, but many people think it’s time to get it out. “What you need to do is have four or five bullet lists highlighting your successes in relation to the job. Recruiters can see them right away and decide whether to proceed to the telephone screening round, ”said Kadam.
What should you highlight? Any increase in sales or new processes? Have you won awards that benefited your previous company or industry? Think about how your skills can help your potential new business and put them on top of your C V.
Kathleen Teixeria, Talent Acquisition at OLG says terminology is one of the simplest ways your resume can look old and out of this world.
“Immediately pick up skills like learning about the Internet or listing websites with WWW from your resume,” he says. “Now, recruiters expect you to have some Internet skills and have websites written like name.ca and not www.name.ca.”
You want your resume to tell a story of your beauty, but remember: a resume should shorten your appetite; not being a full lunch. This is why instead of paragraphs, your resume should have more bullet points. They are the snack format of your experience. For the full meal, they will need to call you for an interview (or switch to your social platform, such as LinkedIn).
“LinkedIn is where everyone goes. Your resume should have a link to your profile and that’s where you can broaden your experience, including rewards, ”says Marci Schnapp, owner of TeamQuest Recruiting.

Don’t bother putting it on your C V. They will ask if they are interested in making an offer to you. Also, thanks to social media, there’s a strong chance that the recruiter or hiring manager knows someone who can blame him.
If your resume has one of these, it’s time for a makeover. Sit down and take your resume apart. Spend some time reworking and modernizing it. It will pay off in the long run.
